Former Danish champion Rasmus Jensen has received a nine-month ban from the sport.
The suspension was handed down by Denmark’s Motor Union following an altercation with event director Per Wiekhorst during the Danish Championship Final in Esbjerg on June 17.
Jensen took to social media to apologise for the incident the next day, writing:
“Dear All. I would like to give you all and especially Esbjerg’s Per Paarup Wiekhorst an unreserved apology for my behaviour.
“I was extremely determined to win the Danish title and was equally disappointed when I made a zero in my first heat. Deeply frustrated, it made me bump my helmet into Per Paarup Wiekhorst and, of course, I should never have done that.
“I am so sorry to Per and everyone else. It wasn't a good advertisement for our sport and we, who race in the Danish Championship, of course, should always lead by example. With love, Rasser.”
His Danish club Holsted has left the door open to a possible appeal, posting: “Initially, Holsted Speedway Club is incomprehensible to the decision, but the club and Rasmus Jensen will now review the decision and the disciplinary board's reasoning before deciding whether to appeal the case. Until that assessment has been made, the club has no further comments on the case.
“We know that this case arouses strong emotions, but appeal to you all to maintain a good tone.”
