Speedway GP star Anders Thomsen confirmed his hand surgery went “really well” after returning to Denmark to begin his rehabilitation.
Thomsen went under the knife in Spanish capital Madrid on Monday, with world-renowned hand surgeon Francisco del Piñal working on the FIM SGP Challenge runner-up.
After suffering damage to his left hand that required surgery three times since 2013 – most recently after his crash at the OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia – Riga in August 2023, Thomsen admitted the movement in his vital clutch hand was heavily restricted.
With Del Piñal satisfied with the operation, Thomsen jetted back to Denmark just 24 hours after the procedure and hopes for a pain-free 2025.
He told the Vojens club Facebook page: “I had a briefing on Monday morning, and then I went to the hospital where the surgery took place. Here I went to sleep at 14:00 and woke up six hours after, with my hand cast into a special plaster.
“He said that it had gone really well, and he also showed me some footage from a previous patient, who has undergone the same surgery, and who today is completely painless.”
While the hand will remain in a cast until January, the rider will begin his recovery with a training plan set in cooperation with Team Denmark – his national sports federation that supports the nation’s elite athletes. Thomsen, who will also have video consultations with Del Piñal, said:
“In two weeks, I'm getting the plaster replaced at home, and then I'll keep this plaster on until January.
“Together with Team Denmark, I am going to make a plan on how to best keep myself physically active in the next several weeks.”
We wish Anders a speedy recovery following his surgery.
